Our story
A new name for work that never stopped
Waves of Courage is a new charity, built as the successor to much of the work carried out for years through Children and the Earth.
The people are the same. The community is the same. What changed is how much room we have to help.
Why a new organization
For more than two decades, the work meant one thing above all: standing beside children facing serious, sometimes terminal illness, and the families carrying them through it. That work continues, and it always will.
But over the years the same request kept arriving in forms the old structure could not always answer. An adult with no one to advocate for them. A household one modification away from being able to function. A project too big for a single family and too small for anyone else to fund. Waves of Courage was created deliberately broader so the answer can more often be yes.
What that means in practice
- We keep supporting children and families. This remains the heart of what we do, unchanged.
- We help adults and individuals too. Courage isn’t an age bracket, and neither is need.
- We take on larger community projects. Work that lifts a whole neighborhood, not only one household.
- We keep room to improvise. Real hardship rarely fits a program description. We would rather meet the need in front of us than turn it away for being the wrong shape.
- We build with others. Local organizations bring people, skills and equipment we could never fund alone.
What we believe
Compassion, hope, community and change — in that order. Compassion notices. Hope decides it is worth trying. Community makes it possible. Change is what is left afterwards.
“We can’t add days to their lives, but we will add life to their days.”
That sentence came from our founders, and it is the clearest statement of what we are for. Some things cannot be fixed. Almost everything can be made lighter, warmer and less lonely. Small moments, lasting impact.
